Demand for healthcare services is increasing globally, primarily due to population ageing, increased prevalence of chronic and complex conditions resulting in a continuing trend of growing care need.

A common feature is the increasing levels of avoidable chronic diseases which place a significant burden both on patients and health systems, and which show no sign of abating. Historical models and design of care are changing and as such the tools that are needed must also adapt.

Inexpensive and more accessible tools to screen and assess patients in community settings could provide a better first line in these new healthcare service models.

Just as breathing profiles change under stress or disease, vocal characteristics such as pitch, jitter, shimmer, and harmonic-to-noise ratio alter when the respiratory and laryngeal systems are compromised.

In healthy individuals, vocal cord vibration is symmetrical and steady, whereas individuals experiencing respiratory distress or neurological conditions often display measurable voice degradation, vocal fatigue, or altered speech-breathing coordination.
